As an engineer, you want a PTFE coating supplier you can trust to deliver quality coatings with a quick turnaround.

Not all coating application companies are the same. If your supplier isn’t cutting the mustard, it will lead to some or all of the problems below further down the line – giving you a massive headache.

  • Premature failure of coating

The last thing you want as an engineer is to have to stop production because your PTFE coating is starting to fail prematurely. Your coatings company may have made promises regarding the number of likely cycles, but these will count for nothing if the coatings aren’t applied correctly.

Flaking and de-lamination of your coatings means a shorter lifespan, disrupted production schedules and additional costs.

  • Contamination of product being produced

When your coatings start to fail during the production process, it’s easy for flakes of the coating to come off and contaminate the product. If this happens it can be catastrophic in terms of lost time and also safety issues, particularly where bakeware and food are concerned.

If there are small blisters and voids in your coatings, these are a gateway for contamination which may be difficult to detect with the naked eye in some cases.

  • Accelerated corrosion of metalwork

A poorly applied coating can cause a number of issues if it’s not detected before being used. For example, if chemical tanks are the items being coated, accelerated corrosion (bleeding of rust) could result in a disaster if toxic substances start to leak while being transported or stored in a workplace.

  • Poor performance of coating

PTFE coatings have a number of excellent qualities when applied correctly such as stability, heat resistance and low coefficient of friction. Coatings which haven’t been applied as they should have been will lead to poor performance in many areas.

As a result, any number of failures could occur in the manufacturing process or when the finished coated items are being used in the relevant industry sector. The upshot of this is that your company’s reputation could be on the line.

  • Loss of production and product wastage

Flaking, poor performance and contamination all mean a loss of production and all the problems that can bring. A poorly applied coating can wreak havoc with client deadlines when you can’t get the finished products out quickly enough.

The other financial aspect to consider is wastage. For example, if you’re an engineer in a bakery and a large percentage of product is sticking to the tins and can’t be sent to your end customer, then this is obviously going to cost the bakery dearly when it comes to the money spent on producing goods that can’t be sold on.
